Stephanotisfloribunda

Native to Madagascar – this species experiences a sub-tropical to tropical climate which consists of hot, humid, rain and a cooler period. Indoors it can be difficult to mimic the conditions this plant thrives in, although the main problem will be it flowering and growing well rather than surviving. Not to be confused with the jasmine plant – which is another species from a different genus, although it’s flowers are similar and fragrant. The Jasmine plant is commonly used for bridal bouquets and wreaths. This is because of the small white attractive blooms which match the white wedding look needed, and the stems winding around wire hoops, create a perfect wreath.

Jade Vine

Strongylodon macrobotrys, commonly known as jade vine, emerald vine or turquoise jade vine, is a species of leguminous perennial woody vine, a native of the tropical forests of the Philippines, with stems that can reach up to 18 m in length. Flowers have a beautiful seagreen/turquoise color that is almost beyond description. This color is extremely rare in the plant world. The bloom is a pendant, clustered birds beak like inflorescence up to 4 1/2 ft. long and puts on a spectacular show when in bloom. Often used in Lei making. Can be grown indoors. The hue is probably the rarest in the world of flowers. A vigorous grower once established, it can reach 30-40 ft tall, but is perfect for a pergola where the blooming clusters can hang down. Specimen vine. Blooming season: winter-spring. Cannot stand frost or drought. Grows best in Zones 10-11. Young leaves had very dark, almost black color, then the leaf turns pale green with dark veins which looks like chlorosis, but it is not. As the leaf matures, it turns deep green.

Pedilanthus Tithymaloides Variegatus

Easily recognized by its rubbery, slightly zig-zagging stems, variegated devil’s backbone has green and white leaves and reddish flowers in summertime. Its parent is a tender, succulent, perennial shrub that has an irritating milky sap, and is native to tropical America from Florida southward into northern South America. This selection, ‘Variegatus,’ has medium-green, slightly glossy leaves that are perfect ovals edged in white. They flank the zigzag stems to resemble a crooked backbone with ribs. Although flowering in flushes year round in warm tropical regions, it blooms most heavily in summer. At the tip of the stems, small, starry, red flowers protrude from a cluster of reddish bracts (modified leaves). The flowers may be visited by an occasional insect. When flowering or chilly winter temperatures occur, the leaves may blush pink. An extended drought or winter cold spell may cause the leaves to completely drop off.
